April 1, 2024
HURFOM: At about 8 pm on March 27th, 2024, an ambulance struck a landmine and was shot at while traveling on the Yangon – Mawlamyine Highway Road near Ka Mar Sai village, Thaton Township, Mon State. The driver and a patient sustained injuries.
The ambulance owned by the “Ah Kyin Nar Twelve Let” Social and Rescue Team was transporting a patient from Thaton Hospital to Yangon General Hospital.
The driver sustained an injury to his face and the patient suffered an injury to his knee.
“We struck a landmine and then were shot. The driver and the patient were injured but others were safe. The whole body of the ambulance was damaged by the gunshots,” said an official from the Social and Rescue Team.
The ambulance could not continue its journey and social workers requested another emergency and rescue team be dispatched to take the injured to the Thaton District General Hospital.
“We, social workers, have to suffer alone (No one protects us). I would like to request both sides (the military junta and the revolutionary forces) not to attack ambulances,” said a social worker who wants to stay anonymous.
It is not known which group is responsible for the attack.
According to a report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released on August, 2023, at least 40 social workers have been killed in Burma since the February 1, 2021 military dictatorship began.
