Frequent artillery attacks force local villagers to flee home in Yebyu

HURFOM: From July 8th to 16th, 2025, the Ka Lane Aung based 282nd Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) had frequently launched indiscriminate artillery attacks to Ma Yan Chaung and Mile Chauk Sell (60-Mile) villages, Yar Phu village track, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim. The attacks had frightened the local villagers and some residents decided to flee their home for safety.

On July 15th, a bomb dropped beside Mile Chauk Sell village. some artillery shells also dropped in nearby rubber plantations. There is no casualty but the artillery shells frequently dropped nearby the village,” said a villager from Mile Chauk Sell.

The revolutionary forces are active around in Yar Phu village track and some of their troops have stationed themselves in the villages. Their presence frightens the villagers and more than 100 residents have fled their home.

Some Yar Phu residents have fled from home. They have taken temporary shelter at their relatives’ houses in Ye Township. We have no alternative but to flee home as our village is full of revolutionary forces. We can go nowhere after 6 pm. We can’t run away when the armed clash breaks out so we have to flee in advance,” said a Ma Yan Chaung villager.

On June 15th, the artillery attacks from the LIB #282 destroyed about 20 betel nut plants.

Moreover, on July 8th, the indiscriminate artillery attacks also killed three children and an adult and severely injured a resident from Kaw Hline village.

Even we escaped from the fear, we have to worry about our home. Now, the betel nut plants start to fruit and we’re worrying if all of our juvenile fruits are stolen. It also isn’t okay to stay at the others’ houses,” said a resident.

Snice July 10th, the “Bo Nay Toe’s Group” from the Karen National Union has limited movement on the Ye – Dawei Highway Road between Yar Phu village track and Thar Yar Mon village from 6 pm to 6 am.

Woman Arrested in Ye, Mon State, for Alleged Social Media Activity

HURFOM: A woman from Ye, Mon State, was arrested by junta authorities for allegedly posting content considered “propaganda” on her social media account, according to local residents.

The woman, known as Yamin (also called Lin Lin), is a resident of Yan Kyi Aung Ward in Ye Town. She was arrested on July 18 at around 3:10 PM. Her TikTok account, where she reportedly posted the content in question, is under the name “yaminLove.”

Junta Troops Shot and Killed a Civilian in Yan Taung Village, Thayet Chaung Township

HURFOM: A local man from Yan Taung village, located along the Dawei–Myeik highway in Thayet Chaung Township, Dawei District, was shot and killed by junta troops on the morning of July 19, according to eyewitnesses and residents.

The incident occurred around 9:00 AM when troops stationed at the monastery in the center of the village opened fire on Ko Win Aye, a man in his 40s, as he was riding his motorbike. Soldiers claimed he was attempting to flee after turning his vehicle around.

“Ko Win Aye was shot while riding his motorbike after spotting the soldiers. It happened very suddenly. On that day, the junta forces also fired small arms and artillery shells for about 15 minutes around the village,” said a local resident who witnessed the scene.

On the following morning, July 20, after the troops had vacated the area, villagers began searching for Ko Win Aye. His body was discovered buried near the monastery fence. Locals later exhumed his body and held a funeral and cremation that same afternoon.

The killing occurred amid ongoing military operations in Thayet Chaung Township, where local communities continue to suffer from arbitrary violence and widespread fear. Just days earlier, on July 16, junta troops detained four residents from Yan Taung and another four from neighbouring villages. These civilians were reportedly used as human shields for four days during the operation, according to a local woman familiar with the incident.

The detained villagers were taken as far as the Shwe Guu Taung bridge checkpoint before eventually being released.

In another operation on July 14, the troops split their forces between Nyaung Zin and Yan Taung villages, advancing toward several nearby communities including Tha Yet Hnit Kwa and Thin Kyun. During this offensive, three villagers were also detained and used as human shields. They were later released.

Weekly Analysis: Artillery Fire by the Military Junta Threatens Civil Safety and Security in Southeastern Burma

The military junta continues to perpetrate human rights violations with impunity. Across targeted areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), including Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi region, civilians are under constant threat of attacks, often without warning. Artillery fire over the last week has led to further trauma in conflict-affected communities, as well as the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians.

A 55-year-old woman from Aung Bala Kone village in Konedoe Township, Karen State, tragically passed away after being terrified by loud artillery shelling fired by junta troops. According to a statement released by the KNU Central Committee, the woman—who had pre-existing heart disease—suffered a fatal heart attack after being shocked and frightened by the explosions.
