Three Pagodas villagers forced to gather construction materials

New Conflicts in Mon Areas Signal Instability in 2010

“We have to try”: Mounting pressure in election preparations and responses from the Mon State community

Introduction

Between December 2009 and early January 2010, South-East Command Major General That Naing Win issued a series of orders to local and regional Burmese government administrators in Mon State, mandating that their offices begin lobbying the residents of the areas under their administrative control for political support, in preparation for the 2010 election. DKBA combined base supplies gathered at villager expense

HURFOM, Bee Lin: The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) Brigade No. 999 and No. 333 have demanded building materials such as wood planks and nails, for building a new permanent base in Bee Lin Township, Mon State. 200 Karen villagers forced into service in Than Tha Bin Township

HURFOM: Between January 7^th and January 10^th of this year, at least 200 villagers from various Karen communities in Than Tha Bin Township, Thaungoo district in Pegu division, were forced into service by soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 424 and Military Operation Command (MOC) No. 20, both based in Than Tha Bin Township. 10 Standard students forced to study through the night

WCRP: 10 standard students required to pay 5000 kyat (4.95 USD) per month to attend an all night study program in Khaw-Zar sub-township, Mon State.

The fee covers the costs of using the school after normal hours, petrol for the generator, and materials. Regular school hours are from 9am to 3pm and the compulsory program is from 6pm to 6am, Monday thru Friday. Students return home on the weekends and during break periods. Read more
