Ethnic parties say Electoral law Article #10, granting temporary migrants local voting rights must be abolished for free and fair elections

HURFOM: Five non-Burmese ethnic political parties are calling for the abolition  of Article #10 of the Electoral law in order to get free and fair elections in 2020.  The five ethnic political parties include the Kachin State People’s Party, Kayah State Democratic Party, the Karen National Democratic Party, Chin National Democratic Party and the Mon Unity Party.

Newly formed MNHRC looks like a government structure, argue human rights activists

HURFOM: On January 14, 2020, the President Office released a statement that the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) was being reorganized. According to the statement this move is in order  to promote and protect fundamental rights of citizens in accordance with the Constitution.

Ma Latt landslide continues to disrupt villagers lives -5 months later

HURFOM: The Ma Latt mountain landslide near Ye Pyar Kone village, Paung Township, Mon State on 9 August 2019, caused more than 70 deaths and many houses were destroyed. It was believed that each household was to have received 500,000 kyats following the Vice President’s site visit  on 12 August. However, only 18 households are reported to have received any financial support and in some cases that was not until 5 months after landslide.

Mon State Chief Minister visited Mane Bala excavation site but not meet with local villagers

HURFOM: Yangon-based Royal Eagle Development Group Co., Ltd., has been excavating treasure and other valuables left by retreating Japanese troops during World War II at Mount Mane Bala near Wae Kawa village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State and Mon State Chief Minister Dr Aye Zan visited the excavation site for two days on January 9 and 10, 2020. However, the Chief Minister did not meet with the local people.

Houses along the Ataran river suffer damage: Homeowners point the finger at Mawlamyine Cement’s shipping vessels.

HURFOM: Mawlamyine Cement Limited (MCL) relies on the Ataran river to transport supplies for its cement plant located near Kaw Pa Naw and Kaw Don villages in Pyar Taung area, Kyaikmayaw Township, Mon State.

Family members demand military hand over soldier to civil court to face charges of sexual assault of a minor

HURFOM: On December 28, 2019, a sergeant lieutenant from the Southeast Command was reported to have sexually assaulted an 11-year-old minor in Naung Kha Ri Ward, Mawlamyine, Mon State.

Local villagers still worried of potential armed clashes between Burmese army and the NMSP’s camp in Japan Well

HURFOM: Local villagers remained frightened there may be more fighting between the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Tatmadaw after they and the  Border Guard Force (BGF) set up a camp just 300 yards away from New Mon State Party (NMSP) camp in Hin Thar Tine, Japan Well village, Three-Pagoda Pass, near the Thai-Myanmar Border, according to Dr. Banyar Aung Moe, a former Amyo Thar Hluttaw Representative.

On December 19th, the Myanmar Police Force held a press conference regarding a widely known Naypyidaw child rape case, where senior officials from the Police Force revealed the names and detailed information about the rape victim and family. The media were shocked by this action and stopped the live broadcast of the press conference. They also removed all video content of the event from their websites and social media pages.
