December 6, 2023

HURFOM: Ye Township, Mon State has to buy electricity from private companies, due to a gasoline shortage.  Electricity providers announced that service will now be available in rotation.

Myat Thura Company provides electricity to southern Ye Township,  Southern Myanmar Development (SMD) provides electricity to northern Ye Township.

Beginning  December 5, Myat Thura Company announced they would provide electricity only between the hours of 1 pm to 9 pm,  and SMD announced they would provide electricity from 4 am to 7 am and from 5 pm and 8 pm.

It has also been very difficult to buy gasoline in Ye Township, and business owners say they have to halt operations.

Our business has to use electricity. The time they provide electricity isn’t okay for us. So we have to stop our business for a while,” said a welding shop owner from Northern Ye Township.

The Ye Township Electricity Providing Committee announced that electricity distribution is now dependent on the availability of  gasoline.

At the moment, the whole of Burma is experiencing gasoline shortage,  and a liter of gasoline is priced at around 3,000 MMK.

The gas station has limited the amount of gasoline. We can’t buy as much as we want. We’re limited as to how much they will sell per customer,” said a local resident.
