HURFOM: A junta-controlled Karen armed group, known as the Kayin Ever Peace Army, began construction in early August of a building near the village hospital in Ta Ra Nar village, Kyikemayaw Township, in Mon State.
This construction project of the armed group is causing villagers to worry.
“They have been constructing for a week. They haven’t informed any villagers of their plans or the purpose of the building. Because they are a junta-controlled Karen armed group, we are worried about a potential armed conflict,” said a villager.
Ta Ra Nar village is under the control of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and villagers report the party opposes the project and urged that construction stop.
Villagers sent a letter to the Chief Minister of Mon State and various government departments, expressing their concerns.
“Our village is peaceful and an armed group has come to construct a building. That place has many comings and goings. The NMSP said they would help us…we are worried,” said a Ta Ra Nar resident.
