Junta forces farmers forced to plant rice, despite landmines: One man injured in Pu Law

In the middle of the day on June 11, a man who went down to the field west of the police station of Pala Town, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division, stepped on a landmine and was severely injured.
Locals also said he was the fifth victim injured by landmines planted behind the police station. The injured person is Ko Kyaw Lin Aung, 30+ years old, from ward No. 4.
“His farm is behind the Pala Police Station. He stepped on a landmine in his paddy field. Local residents are affected by these invisible weapons. I can’t imagine who will be the next victim. How can we farm and make a living?” lamented a local resident.
Pala city Administrator U Kyin Shein, who was appointed by the junta, has been pressuring farmers to plant their fields during the rainy season this year.
He has told farmers that fields that do not grow rice will be confiscated by the junta, and when farmers plant rice they must also pay a tax, at the rate of one bushel per acre.
