Nearly 2,000 young men conscripted in military within a year in Mon State

February 26, 2025

HURFOM: From April, 2024 to January, 2025, the military junta organized ten “military training for conscripts” sessions, and forcefully recruited nearly 2,000 young conscripts in Mon State.

1,500 conscripts have finished their training and have been sent to conflict areas where there have been intense armed clashes, according to a military source.

The military training reached the tenth batch within a year. Seven batches have finished their training. The conscripts were sent to the conflict areas. Most of them are in the front line,” said a source who wants to remain anonymous.

The military junta enacted the public conscription law in February, 2024 and in January, 2025, approved the legal procedures to enact the law.

Initially, the junta targeted migrant workers and the poor to serve as conscripts by providing a monetary incentive. However, many conscripts have died on the front lines and it is getting difficult to recruit conscripts.

In response, the military junta has begun to arrest young men using dubious accusations and force them into military service. These arrests now take place at night and at the homes of young men.

Mon State has two military training centres for conscripts. One is at the 4th Advanced Military Training school in Well Ka Lee village, Thanbyuzayat Township and another is located within the military training school in Thaton Township.

According to the report by the Burma Affairs & Conflict Study, more than 50,000 young men across Burma have been collected as conscripts and more than 30,000 of them have finished their military training and already started their military duties.
