HURFOM: Since the last week of January, 2025, the military junta has been reinforcing their troop presence and conducting military activities around Kaw Bane village, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State. Villagers are worrying about the possibility of armed clashes due to these developments.
Junta’s troops had stationed themselves in residential houses in Bell Su Ward, Kaw Bane village for six months but since the last week of January, 2025, they began to move into nearby areas.
“After the Kaw Ban Police Station was burnt down last year, they stayed in the village. They have now reinforced their troop presence. When the resistance forces attacked them with drones, they responded with indiscriminate artillery attacks. We are worried there may be armed clashes,” said one resident.
The joint resistance forces attacked and took control of the Kaw Bane Police Station in 2023 and they burnt down and destroyed the station. After that, the junta’s troops moved their base to Bell Su Ward, Kaw Bane village and stationed themselves in residential houses.
“They’ve occupied about ten houses. The owners fled to Thailand. Some of them moved to Kha Yar village,” said a villager.
On March 27, 2024, the junta’s air force and navy unit launched aerial and artillery attacks on Dhammasa village close to Kaw Bane village. The attacks destroyed and burnt down more than 400 houses and forced tens of thousands of residents to flee.
