HURFOM: On January 9th, 2025, an intense battle took place between the military junta and the Mon and Karen resistance armed forces in Kyone Long (old) village, Ye Chaung Pyar region, Ye Township, Mon State.
The junta responded with artillery and drone attacks forcing 767 residents from Kyone Long, Well Bine, Kyuak Mee Chaung, Chaung Du and Well Sin villages to flee their homes.
At the moment, there is no active armed clash near Kyone Long (old) village but the junta’s troops have stationed themselves at the village monastery in Kyone Long (old) village. The regiment has been launching artillery and drone attacks targeting nearby villages, which is preventing displaced villagers from returning.
“Before, some villagers went back home. But the junta targeted them with an artillery attack and they ran back here,” said a social worker who helps displaced villagers.
The displaced villagers took shelter at a monastery in Dhamma Parla village under the control of the New Mon State Party but recently, they have moved to the village monastery in Upper Yit Chaung village and plantation nearby Yit Chaung village.
“There are 150 displaced villagers in the monastery in Upper Yit Chaung and 615 displaced villagers staying at a nearby plantation,” said the social worker.
The villagers have been displaced for nearly a month and are in urgent need of food and medicine.
The armed clash on January 9th damaged or destroyed nearly 15 houses in Kyone Long (old) village and killed two villagers.
