Prolonged shutdown of telecommunication network creates hardships in Kyarinnseikyi

December 9, 2024

HURFOM: Beginning in mid-September, 2024, the military junta cut off the telecommunication network in heavy conflict areas in Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State, leaving residents in socioeconomic jeopardy.

To interrupt information flows related to military movement, the junta cut off the telecommunication networks in Ah Nan Kwin, Lot Shan, Way Thar Lee, Bo Ka Daw, Thadar Byat and Phar Ko Po villages for months.

I can access the Internet for just a few minutes in the morning and in the evening. Then, we have no access to the Internet for the rest of the day. Now, even the phone signal has been cut off,” said a local resident.

Due to the prolonged cut in telecommunication networks, residents are unable to make contact with their families and friends, or to operate their businesses and to get any updated information.

Now, businesses that must use the Internet have to stop their operations,” said a villager.
