HURFOM: Since February 1, 2021 the military junta has totally controlled the trade of the US Dollar currency. Despite this control, the junta has failed to sell enough US Dollars to business persons to import gasoline. The result is frequent gasoline shortages across Burma.
During the six months, between January to July 2024, Mon State experienced at least three periods of severe gasoline shortages. The capital city, Mawlamyine, which has the biggest population in Mon State, has suffered the most.
“Gasoline shortages started in 2023. Then, it got worse this year. We have to limit our sales in order to avoid a shortage at our gas station,” said one gas station owner in Mawlamyine.
Fuel boxer trunks have not reached Mawlamyine since the last week of July, 2024. Many gas stations have to stop sales due to the shortage, and some stations have to limit their sales. People have to queue for a long time to buy gasoline.
“The gasoline ran out when it’s my turn. Gasoline shortage is getting worse this year,” said a Mawlamyine resident.
Kyike Hto, Thanbyuzayat and Ye Township have also experienced shortage of gasoline and people have to pay up to 3,000 MMK for one liter of gasoline on the black market.
