Aid to flood victims prevented due to presence of military regiment

HURFOM: Flooding has occurred in the community of Kaw Bane and nearby villages, in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State. Emergency and aid groups cannot reach the area due to the presence of the military regiments.
“All houses in Bell Zu Ward, Kaw Bane village are flooded. But the military regiment stationed themselves in the area so no aid group dares come to provide support. There are no individual donors or aid organizations in the area,” said a Kaw Bane resident.
There is a heavy and continuous rain in Mon and Karen States, and Mawlamyine, Thanbyuzayat, Chaung Zone, Kyikemayaw, Mudon and Ye Townships have flooded. Local sources reported to HURFOM, that if the flooding persists, there will be a shortage of food in the area.
“In previous years, emergency and aid groups reached us just for one or two days after the flood. Now, we can buy food in the market. But if the flood is getting worse and there is no emergency or aid group, we will face a shortage of food,” said a Kaw Bane resident.
Military regiments assume that resistance forces are active around the “Kyaing River” area and indiscriminately launch artillery attacks on the villages. They have also launched “clearance operations” and stationed themselves in the villages.
“The armed clash is still ongoing. There are also frequent artillery attacks and bomb attacks from drones. We didn’t prepare much for the flood. The junta has also arrested social workers who help displaced people so they dare not come to support us,” said a villager from the Kyaing River area.
Last year, the Southeast Command arrested and interrogated former Vice Chair of the Mon State Parliament Dr Aung Nine Oo, for his support to displaced persons from Dhammasa village.
