Outbreak of diarrhea and insufficient medicine in Pu Law IDP camps

July 31, 2024

HURFOM: Since July, 2024, there has been an outbreak of diarrhea in three internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division.  Patients are urgently in need of medicine, according to local organizations who help displaced persons.

About 1,500 displaced villagers have no access to clean water and food and they are surviving in unclean environments.

All three IDP camps have only one volunteer medic and she is available for only two days a week. If we have an emergency case, we have to go to a doctor who lives a mile away from the camp. We also have a shortage of medicine,” said a social worker.

At the moment, about 10 youth from the three IDP camps are suffering from acute diarrhea.

We’ve attempted to control the outbreak. But we’re in the middle of armed clashes and in the rainy season so it isn’t okay to get medicine,” said an official from the Pu Law IDP Assistance Group.

In May and June, 2024, almost all of the displaced persons in the Pu Law IDP camps suffered from malaria and there was a shortage of medicine.
