Children in Kyikemayaw unable to go to school due to military tensions

June 6, 2024

HURFOM: The 2024-25 academic year started on June 3rd, 2024 but just a few children in Dhammasa, Than Ka Long, Ta Ra Nar and Kyune Yaw villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State can join the government school due to the armed conflict and security concerns.

The military is still stationed in the villages. We are afraid that an armed clash can break out during school time. We are also worried our children will encounter danger on their way to and from going to school,” said a resident from Kyikemayaw Township.

The military junta and the village administrators announced that school registration could begin on May 23, 2024.

The soldiers are still stationed in monasteries in Dhammasa and Kyune Yaw villages. No villager dares to go back home. There have been artillery attacks every night so how can we send our children to school?” said a student parent.

The military junta has launched indiscriminate artillery attacks and tightened the security.

Most government schools in Bilin, Kyike Hto, Thaton and Ye Townships where there has been an intense and major armed conflict have failed to open.

The military junta stated that 1,385 government schools, private schools and monastic schools had opened in the 2024-25 academic year and 340,868 students had applied for their school registration in Mon State.
