HURFOM: In January, 2024, nearly 20 civilians from Kyike Hto, Bilin and Thaton Townships, Thaton District, Mon State were killed or injured by the military junta’s artillery attacks, reported the Thaton District Karen National Union (KNU).

The military junta launched at least 58 artillery attacks and two air assaults within a month in January, 2024.

According to the KNU statement, four civilians were killed and 14 local villagers including a 9-year-old child were injured by the attacks.

Artillery attacks are worsening day after day. There is no day when we don’t hear the sound of artillery attack. Bilin has suffered the worst. No one dares to stay in Win Tar Ban village. The entire village has run away,” said a villager.

In addition to civilians’ casualties, 29 houses, two monasteries, two religious buildings, a pagoda and a village clinic were destroyed by artillery and air attacks.

Approximately 3,000 residents from Bilin and Thaton Townships have fled and villagers are unable to go to their workplaces, due to the constant artillery attacks.
