Another fifty houses burnt down in Kaw Ka Rate: More difficulties for displaced persons to return home

HURFOM: On January 21st, 2024, another 50 houses in Ward #5, Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State were burnt down, local residents reported to HURFOM.
Both the military junta and the joint revolutionary forces are active in Kaw Ka Rate and there has been ongoing heavy battles as of January 22nd.
“Nearly all the houses were burnt down. Everything is lost. Only three or four houses are left. The fire brigade didn’t come to stop the fire so the situation was getting worse,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.
Ward #5 is inhabited largely by the Muslim community. Local people said that the houses were burnt down by a group, but no one knows which group is responsible for the fire.
“I’ve learnt that the houses were burnt down by an unknown group. Now, I have no home to return to. Nearly 50 houses, including mine, were destroyed in the fire. I’m speechless (to express my suffering),” said a displaced person from Kaw Ka Rate.
There has been a long, heavy and consistent armed conflict in Kaw Ka Rate Town for nearly two months, that began on December 1st, 2023. More than 40,000 residents had to flee their home and more than 200 houses were burnt and destroyed.
