Junta Extorts Over 50 Drivers with Temporary License Plates in Ye Township

More than 50 cars and motorcycles without proper licenses or using temporary plates were stopped and extorted by junta forces on the Asin village highway, near the entrance of Myo Haung Kone in Ye Township, Mon State. Local sources confirmed that around 50 people traveling in those vehicles were also detained.
On the morning of May 15, at approximately 9 a.m., around 70 junta soldiers from the Ye-based SKAK No. 19 were deployed toward the Asin village entrance. These troops began stopping vehicles without official registration or with temporary plates, detaining both the vehicles and their drivers.
According to a resident from Ye, the troops were stationed in the area as security support for a military vessel that had just arrived on the Asin coast. “A warship came that day, and many junta soldiers arrived with weapons. Two military vehicles were also seen. As troops moved from Asin back toward Ye town, they stopped drivers with unlicensed or temporary-plated vehicles and demanded money from them,” the resident explained.
Those who were able to pay the extortion fees were released along with their vehicles. Others remained detained during the incident.
The junta’s reliance on the waterway route from Mawlamyine to Ye—particularly via Pan Dar Port in Zee Phyu Thaung village and the Asin coast—has increased recently, as resistance forces have gained control over parts of the Ye–Thanbyuzayat highway. This has led to heightened military presence along the waterway and surrounding areas, often at the expense of local civilians.
