Five Young Men Arrested in a Single Night in Thaton

May 14, 2025

In Thaton Town, Mon State, five young men were arrested in a single night on May 12, 2025. According to residents and relatives, all five have since lost contact with their families.

The arrests occurred during the evening when junta security forces, patrolling the area, detained the young men from Bin Hlieng and Lake Inn wards. Among those arrested was Ko Phoe Tae, aged 25, along with four other local youths.

“They were just sitting at a small roadside betel nut shop when about five military and police vehicles suddenly pulled up. Without saying anything, the soldiers ordered them onto the trucks and took them away,” said a local eyewitness.

The five young men were reportedly taken to the Thaton Township Police Station. When family members tried to visit or inquire about them, they were denied access, raising fears that the detainees may soon be sent to forced military training camps.

Facing ongoing manpower shortages, the junta has been intensifying forced recruitment efforts. Since early May, authorities in Thaton have been rounding up individuals accused of minor offenses, including criminal charges, drug use, or violating local administrative orders, and transferring them into military conscription programs.

Similar patterns of arrest and forced conscription are being reported in several other townships across Mon State, with young people particularly at risk of being targeted and forced into military service.
