Junta extorts 5,000 MMK for permit allowing two men to ride motorbike in Ye

HURFOM: In 2023, the junta banned two men from riding the same motorbike in Ye Township, Mon State, but in October 2024, the authority had to lift the ban, according to the locals.

According to locals, beginning October 1^st, 20224, the junta began issuing a permit for two men to ride the same motorbike. The permit includes the name, birthdate, address, color of motorbike and license plate.

However, the junta is extorting 5,000 MMK for each permit, reported motorbike taxi drivers.

“I got my card on October 10^th. I had to pay 5,000 MMK. If they find me carrying my male passenger on the rear of my motorbike, I can show the card (to avoid punishment). Before, two men riding the same motorbike was banned in Ye but now, if you have a card, you can ride,” said a motorbike taxi driver.

The junta’s authority said the permit cannot be hired or transferred and if an applicant violates these conditions, the permit holder will be punished.

“Before, PDF members rode motorbikes when attacking military bases. After that, they banned two men riding the same motorbike. Now, they’ve lifted the ban only for motorbike taxi drivers,” said a Ye resident.

Previously, there had been cases of Ye residents being arrested or threatened and extorted for two men riding the same motorbike.
