Intense battle in Tenasserim forces 6,000 residents to flee homes

HURFOM: Since the last week of August, 2024, the military junta has launched a series of military operations, resulting in the displacement of 6,000 villagers from Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division. The military has placed soldiers in villages, launched artillery attacks, dropped bombs by drones and arrested local villagers.
On August 26th and 27th, there was a battle between the junta and the resistance forces in Ban Law village that forced the entire population of eight villages including Ban Law, Thane Naw, Tha Kyat and Chauk Mile villages to flee their homes. One third of the population in the east coastal area of Nyaung Pin Kwin village tract had to flee their homes.
In September, the junta deployed an excessive number of troops to launch a military operation in Ma Zaw village tract which is on the border of Tenasserim and Myeik Townships. The troops stationed themselves at a school.
The regiment launched artillery attacks and dropped bombs by drone in Ah Shay Taung, Zaw Pyin Gyi, Shan Htein, Lat Mell, Taw Tan and Ta Kan Taung Pu villages forcing many residents to flee their homes.
Even though the number of displaced persons is increasing, it is difficult to support remote camps of internally displaced persons due to poor transportation and severe weather, according to social workers.
“We can’t help them to get food daily. Some displaced persons left their homes for more than a month already. The motor ways are blocked and the commodity price is high so we’re unable to collect enough food,” said a member of “Nwe Oo Mitta” displaced persons assistance association.
The military has barred villagers from returning to their homes to get food and other “items” so their situation is getting worse.
“The soldiers are destroying empty houses and looted food and household materials. They killed and ate all the villagers’ livestock. They took batteries and solar plates,” said a displaced person.
Military tensions persist in Tenasserim Township and the junta has blocked all motorways, making things difficult for displaced villagers.
The ongoing junta’s military operations, artillery attacks and aerial assaults have forced more than 60,000 residents to flee their homes, stated FE5 Tanintharyi on September 14th, 2024.
