Child killed by unexploded bomb in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: On September 28^th, 2024, a 13-year-old child from Kyauk Ye Twin village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State was killed by an explosion from a remnant bomb belonging to the military junta.

The 2^nd light infantry battalion operating under the 44^th military command in Kyike Hto Townsip launched artillery attacks on the “Aung Tha Byae” rubber plantation located between Win Kan and Kyauk Ye Twin village. Some of the artillery bombs did not explode upon landing.

Maung Phyo Aung picked up a 40-mm artillery bomb and played with the bomb by hitting it with a hammer. Then, the bomb exploded and he died on the spot.

“He picked up the bomb from the rubber plantation in the evening. Then, he played with the bomb by hitting it with a hammer at about 8 am on September 28. He died on the spot,” said a local villager.

The locals said there had been no armed clashes in either Win Kan or Kyauk Ye Twin villages but the military junta launched indiscriminate artillery attacks.

“All the artillery bombs exploded before but some of the bombs remained unexploded, and this time the child brought one of them home without notice,” said a local source.

On June 4^th, 2024, an explosion of remnant artillery bomb in a primary school at Eain Shey Pyin Ward, Dawei City, Tenasserim Division killed a 9-year-old child and injured 25 other students.

On May 14th, 2024, a 50-year-old displaced man from Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State returned to his home and was cleaning his compound. He also uncovered an exploded bomb and died on the spot.

From January to June, 2024, there have been 692 victims of explosions from landmine and remnant ammunition across Burma, 37 percent of these victims are children.
