Junta extorts motorbike riders in Paung

HURFOM: The military junta banned two men from riding the same motorbike in Paung Township, Mon State and imposed a curfew. Junta’s security forces manipulate the restrictions to arrest and extort money from residents who breach the restrictions.

When I was caught (with “two men riding the same motorbike), they asked for 200,000 MMK. I requested the amount be reduced to 100,000 MMK but they did not accept that. The police forces at the entrance of the Mottama Bridge are really bad. When coming back from work, we have to share the same motorbike. We even have to apologize to them while they accept our money and release us,” said a worker who experienced the incident.

Junta’s soldiers and police forces target local visitors who came back from “Zin Jike” and “Sin Yaw” Waterfall in front of Zin Jike and Paung Police Stations and at the entrance of the Mottama Bridge.  At these locations, residents are arrested and extorted.

According to a source close to the junta, these actions are taking place at the instruction of the Mawlamyine based Southeast Military Command, who instructed troops to increase security in August.

It’s a one-month plan. As far as I know, the security forces have to report at least five arrests daily to the command. If not, they’ll be blamed. The situation has favored the police forces to make extra money,” said the source.

According to a source close to the military junta, there have been more than 60 arrests in Paung Township from August 1st to the 17th, and the number of the arrests excludes the “arrest, extort and release” cases.
