Four Mawlamyine residents arrested and charged

Four residents from Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon State, have been arrested by the junta after being accused of providing financial support to the National Unity Government (NUG) and are charged under the junta’s Anti-Terrorist Act.
On April 4rth, 2024, the junta accused U Zin Min Oo and Daw Cho Cho Khine from Mawlamyine of providing financial support to the PDF and organizing a fundraising campaign for the group on social media. Both were arrested at their home.
On April 7th, 2024, Ko Kyi War Tun and Daw Pwint Phyu Aung from Maung Ngan Ward, Mawlamyine were accused of selling lottery tickets for the NUG and providing financial support to the PDF and arrested by the junta.
“They can control Mawlamyine, they are oppressing people more and more. They’ve arrested the young men in the streets and extorted money from them. There is no rule of law. At the moment, no one goes outside at night in Mawlamyine,” said a resident.
The four victims have been charged under the Anti-Terrorist Act sections 50(j) and 52(a) and the highest punishment can be lifetime or 20-year’s imprisonment.
On March 25th, 2024, two residents from Kaw Kha Mel and Kha Rom Shan villages, Mawlamyine Township were arrested after being accused of providing financial support to the PDF and were also charged under the Anti-Terrorist Act.
