Junta Launches Airstrike on Winkaphaw Village in Thayet Chaung Township, Dawei District

HURFOM: On the afternoon of May 19, the military junta carried out an airstrike on Winkaphaw Village, located in the Taung Pyauk area of Thayet Chaung Township, Dawei District, according to local sources.

Residents reported that the junta’s K8W fighter jet dropped four bombs on the area at around 12:30 PM, even though there was no active fighting taking place at the time.

Dozens of Young People Held at Myine Thayar Police Station as Junta Forcibly Conscripts 180 Youths Across Mon State

Around 50 young people were reportedly detained at the Myine Thayar police station, Mawlamyine, the capitial of Mon State, with a total of approximately 180 individuals arrested from Bilin, Mudon, and Paung townships for forced conscription into the junta’s Batch 13 military training. The arrests mark a worrying escalation in the junta’s ongoing efforts to expand its military ranks through coercion and fear.

Weekly Analysis: Brutal Escalation of Violence Threatens Civilian Lives and Undermines Security

Over the last week, the military junta has carried out violent acts during its aerial and ground strikes against women and children across the country, including the Sagaing region, where military jets intentionally bombed a school, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 youths. This attack occurred in an area where no fighting was taking place, and no local armed actors were present. In targeted areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) in Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi Region, assaults on innocent civilians have also increased, killing many innocent people, including monks.

A respected abbot lost his life after an artillery shell struck a monastery in Hlaing Kwe village, Kawkareik Township, Karen State. The tragic incident occurred at 10 AM on May 9, 2025, during intense fighting between junta forces and joint resistance groups near Kyon Doe Town. An artillery shell landed directly on the Hlaing Kwe village monastery, seriously injuring the abbot, U Thu Zar Ta, who was inside at the time. U Thu Zar Ta, aged 56, sustained shrapnel wounds to his back and arms. Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, he sadly passed away while being transported.

Junta Extorts Over 50 Drivers with Temporary License Plates in Ye Township

More than 50 cars and motorcycles without proper licenses or using temporary plates were stopped and extorted by junta forces on the Asin village highway, near the entrance of Myo Haung Kone in Ye Township, Mon State. Local sources confirmed that around 50 people traveling in those vehicles were also detained.

On the morning of May 15, at approximately 9 a.m., around 70 junta soldiers from the Ye-based SKAK No. 19 were deployed toward the Asin village entrance. These troops began stopping vehicles without official registration or with temporary plates, detaining both the vehicles and their drivers.

Junta Shelling Kills One, Injures Two in Laung Lon Township

One man was killed and two others injured after a junta-fired shell exploded in Inn Won village, Laung Lon Township, Dawei District, according to local residents and family members.

The attack occurred on the afternoon of May 16, when junta troops stationed at the Ministry of Border Affairs Office in downtown Dawei launched artillery and drone strikes on Inn Won village—despite no clashes taking place in the area. The shelling seriously injured three civilians.
