Ye Residents Face Extortion from Civil Groups During Construction Projects

When Residents of Ye Township build new houses, they are forced to comply with extortion practices of the Municipal Committee Group. Earlier this year the Municipal Committee Group stopped Nay Aung Myint, 50, owner of the Su Mon Furniture Factory, from finishing construction of his house, until he paid the committee. Nai Aung Myint is a wealthy member of the Ye Township, Mon State community, and donates generously to the people of the area. Read more

New Mon State Party attends Geneva Call workshop for prevention of Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict

On April 25-26^th, the New Mon State Party (NMSP) held a two-day sexual violence workshop on the Thai-Burmese border, conducted by the non-government organization Geneva Call. The objective of the workshop was to highlight international law surrounding sexual violence, and to have members of the NMSP sign Geneva Call’s “Deed of Commitment”, which prohibits sexual violence and gender discrimination in armed conflict. Local Residents are Prepared to Protest Power Plant if the Government Continues to Ignore Their Rights

Residents of Ain Din Village, Ye Township, Mon State are frustrated that the Ministry of Electric Power and its partner, Tokyo-Thai Group, did not seek their opinions, not inform them in any way, of their plans to build a 1280 Megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in the area. Plans have been made to build the power plant in Ah Den Village, which will cost an estimated US$270 million, without any communication or information sharing with the local people, nor any apparent concern for the environmental impacts the power plant would have on the local people. Residents of Ah Sin Village face hardship as they are forced to pay for local road construction. As rural development expands, local people are experiencing the heavy burden of paying for expanding infrastructure from their own pockets. Read more

Citizens loose trust in Burma’s 2014 Census due to lack of Transparency

According to the local people of Mudon Township, Mon State, most of the area residents are not interested in the 2014 Burmese Census, which took place between March 30^th and April 14^th of this year, due to profound distrust of the Burmese government. Read more

Residents of Mudon Township Face Extortion when Applying for National Identity Cards

The Mon community has registered complaints to the Department of Immigration and National Registration in Mudon Township, Mon State, in regards to demands of exorbitant fees for ID registration. Community groups have requested Mon assemblies to inform the Mon State government of this issue, but the extortion remains unresolved. Read more

Mon Community Suspects Corruption in 2014 Census Reporting

Burma’s Mon community holds serious doubts concerning the Burmese government, and its data collection procedures for the country’s 2014 census, conducted from March 30^th to April 10^th. Ethnic Mon community members are concerned that the government did not cooperate with the local people, and actively worked to diminish Mon representation in census documentation. Read more

Threat and extortion at the hands of Mon splinter group

 

Refusing to be extorted, the ethnic Mon community living in Ye Township, Mon State, located in southern Burma, lives in fear of being subjected to torture and kidnappings by a local Mon splinter group. Though Burmese military bases are located throughout the area, such incidents of torture and kidnapping are largely left unresolved. In the country’s transition to a democratic society, Mon people continue to confront threats of kidnapping, physical assault, and demands of extortion from members of their own ethnic community, as well from as the Burmese military.

Ethnic Karen Communities in Southern Burma Encounter the Impacts of Mining

Karen people living in Ka Htaung Nee villages, in Mitar sub-township, Tavoy district, located in the Tenasserim Region are experiencing increased air and water pollution due to mining activities in the region. May Flower Mining Enterprises Limited and No. 3 Mining Enterprise have joined together to mine in the Ka Htaung Nee village group without consulting the local population, nor considering the effects that their business in the area will have on the local environment, eco system, residents’ livelihoods, or local plantations. As local residents’ land and crops are destroyed, air and water polluted, they do not receive any compensation, and their rights are ignored. Read more

Landmine Explosions Remain A Constant Fear for Local Villagers

Although ceasefire agreements have officially ended fighting between the Burmese army and many ethnic armed groups, casualties persist. Landmines have been left throughout villages, leaving innocent civilians’ lives in danger. On February 15, 2014, local Loh Tine villager, Saw Lar Say, stepped on one such landmine buried in a cart road, and lost his leg. Read more
