INTRODUCTION
Along the coast of western Thanbyuzayat Township lies one of Burma’s most beautiful beaches. Besides the natural beauty of the coastline, the region is home to hundreds of farmers who are the heart of the local economy, cultivating long-term crops of rubber and fruit trees. However the strand road construction project, begun in January 2009, has been devastating to the structure of the local economy, costing local villagers an estimated 15 billion kyat (US$15 million) in damage to farms, and the project has precipitated hundreds of human rights abuses. SPDC earns extra income as villagers refuse sentry fees

HURFOM: Burmese army soldiers began forcing Thanbyuzayat Township villagers to provide sentry duty along the Ye-Melamine railway.
Some think this is merely a profit-making venture by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), as they also offered up a 1,000 kyat fine for villagers unwilling or unable to stand guard. Read more
After villager pipeline repairs, leaks and fear remain

HURFOM: After villagers repaired the gas pipeline with unpaid manual labor, there are still leaks in the Ah Khon village, Mudon Township, Mon State.

Men posing as Thai police kidnap and rob newlywed

WCRP: Five Bangkok men posed as Thai police before kidnapping and robbing a 20-year-old girl. She had only been married 20 days.
One night in May, at around 3 a.m., the group of five men came to the apartment where a Burmese migrant worker family was living. They broke down the door and searched for money in the room. Read more
Two Migrant women held hostage after abused migrants escape

WCRP: Two women, Mi Moe San and Mi Khin Win (name changed for security purposes), were kidnapped by their construction site supervisor, and held hostage for about 4 nights and 5 days because their husbands ran away after being physically abused by the supervisor and his friends. The two women were kidnapped from the construction site where they work in Kohsirae, Fish Bridge, Phuket, according to Nai Rot, who is close to the victims, and is also a migrant worker from Kaloh village, Ye Township. Child kidnapped by lenders in Thailand over unpaid debt

WCRP: A 13-year-old of child was taken by lenders for 3 days after her mother, who had take out 2 loans, was unable to pay back her debt.
“On June 10th 2009, the lenders came and they wanted me to give back their money. However, my job is not going well so I couldn’t pay them back,” said Ma Ye, the mother of the kidnapped child. “They were angry with me so they took my 13 year old daughter.” Read more
Commander vents anger by assaulting villager

HURFOM, MUDON: A local commander in Mudon township assaulted a young villager after the pipeline section under the commander’s protection was damaged.
On June 10th, the commander from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 209 became angry after a high-ranking officer from South East (SE) Command complained about the gas pipeline rupture in Ah Khon village, Mudon township earlier that day. Read more
