Security forces conduct more interrogations and extort Mawlamyine residents

HURFOM has learned military junta soldiers and the police have been interrogating and extorting money from local motorists and motorbike riders in Mawlamyine, Mon State.

Security forces stationed at junctions in the city stop motorists to check ID cards and driving licenses. They also open motorbike tool boxes. The stops are followed by efforts to extort money, say Mawlamyine residents.

“The amount isn’t the same. They just extort as they like,” said a resident.

Previously only traffic police checked driving licenses and the condition of vehicles, but now, soldiers and police are doing this, and are taking money from residents.

“Only traffic police are responsible for checking driving licenses, helmets and rear mirrors. But now, soldiers and police are checking driving licenses and ID cards. If you don’t have those cards, they extort you,” said a resident.

One reason believed to be related to the exploitative security measures are two drone attacks on the Southeast Military Command that occurred in November of this year.
