Junta establishes more restrictions on movement of people: Kan Bauk villagers worried

September 8, 2023

HURFOM: For more than 2 and half years,  the junta has had check-points in the Kan Bauk Area, Yebyu Township, in Tenasserim Division and they have tightened their security.

Since the attempted coup took place, the junta has put in place more and more restrictions on the movement of people creating problems and inconveniences to local villagers.

They stop and check us by matching our face with the picture in our ID card. The soldiers are in civilian clothes. Even when we’re going around our village, we have to bring all our personal documents,” said a Kan Bauk resident.

If a villager wants to go to Kan Bauk Town, they have to report their plans in advance to their village Administrator and sign a document.

We go to Kan Bauk only if it is inevitable. We feel insecure wherever we go. We’re also unhappy with being checked by soldiers,” said a resident from Zar Dee village, Yebyu Township.

Soldiers at check-points routinely extort money from truck drivers and operators who carry construction materials.
