Junta’s artillery attacks kill one and injures four in Thaton

HURFOM: On July 27, 2023, the military junta launched multiple artillery attacks targeting Htone Boe Lay village, Thaton Township, Mon State.

The attacks killed one villager and injured four others, according to a statement made by the Thaton District Karen National Union.

The joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army and the People’s Defense Forces attacked the junta’s Ve Yaw Battalio, and soon after the military junta launched at least 40 artillery attacks targeting Htone Boe Lay and Htoe Kaw Kyoe villages.

The armed clash just took 30 minutes. After the clash, the junta started shooting artillery weapons. A boy injured his head and died at the scene. The villagers are running away,” said a Htone Boe Lay resident.

The deceased victim is 18-year-old Saw Ele Kaw Shee, and another four villagers including 13-year-old Naw Ele Soe suffered injuries.

On July 15, the junta launched a military operation in Thaton Township that led more than 3,000 villagers from Mi Chaung Eye, Kha Lough Inn and Ma Yan Gone villages to flee their homes.

On July 25, the military arrested two local villagers and used them as human shields. The junta only released one villager.
