Military junta security forces offer no protection from increasing thefts

HURFOM: The political situation in Mon State is becoming more unstable since the military coup.  Commodity prices have been steadily increasing and residents across Burma are experiencing a rise in thefts, burglaries and robberies nearly every day.

We’ve frequently heard that motorbikes were stolen. There is no place to keep our motorbikes safe. If a motorbike is a little bit far away from its owner, it’ll be stolen for sure. People are also being robbed of their motorbikes even when they are riding them. We’re the ones who suffer. We can’t report these crimes to anyone or request protection from anyone, said a Mawlamyine resident.

Residents have noted that military junta’s security forces have provided no protection from the rise in burglaries.

Yesterday, my house was burglarized in broad daylight. The burglar broke my window and took about two million Kyat. I’ve heard that my neighbor also had the same experience. We need to be cautious, said one Mawlamyine resident..

People from the Mon State capital city of  Mawlamyine complain their houses are burglarized and property, including  motorbikes, are being stolen at an alarming rate.  Life has become increasingly  unsafe.

My husband is an air condition service provider so we stored a lot of spare parts which is equivalent to ten of thousands Kayt. The burglar couldn’t take the large air condition units but they did  take the spare parts. The thieves are afraid of nothing today. To make matters worse, commodity prices are ridiculously high, making it very difficult to make a living — so the rise in burglaries and thefts makes things worse, said another victim in Mawlamyine.
