Local Residents Lend Their Support for Suspended Administrator

June 12, 2014

Residents of Kwan Hlar Village, Chaung Zone Township, Mon State, are dissatisfied with the recent suspension of publicly appointed administrator Nai Nay Lin Aung. Nai Nay Lin Aung, 31, was elected by the local people, but the township administration group placed him on a one month suspension from duties in attempts to block his power. Kwan Hlar villagers support Nai Nay Lin Aung, and are preparing to fight the suspension with upper-level courts.

On May 12, U Aung Tun Thein, a top administrator of Chaung Zone Township, summoned Nai Nay Lin Aung and announced that he was to be suspended due to allegations that he was too young to serve as village administrator. However, villagers claim that it is unfair to dismiss someone from their elected post due to their age.

Nai Nay Lin Aung won the seat as Kwan Hlar Village administrator last year, with U San Myint, from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) coming in second. After the election, U San Myint became the head of a militia group in Kwan Hlar Village.

In Burma’s 2008 Constitution it states that any person over 25 years of age is allowed to participate in administration. Consequently, five representatives from Kwan Hlar Village have approved Nai Nay Lin Aung’s innocence.

A lawyer from Chaung Zone explains, “They are blindly seeking weakness in Nai Nay Lin Aung. They tried to dismiss him, and replace him with people from the USDP [because] they are preparing for the 2015 election. If there is an administrator approved by the public, [the USDP] can’t do what they want.”

The solicitor continues, “after dismissing Nai Nay Lin Aung from his position, U San Myint, a member of the USDP and head of the militia group, [was appointed] Kwan Hlar Village administrator. U San Myint and U Aung Tun Thein also planned to submit [a] letter to [the] upper level to dismiss Nai Nay Lin Aung for sure. It seems that [the] USDP is preparing for the 2015 election now.”
