Mother and son sustain injuries after stepping on landmine in Dawei

HURFOM: On February 25th, 2025, a mother and son – 43-year-old Daw Mar Lwin and 13-year-old Maung Yan Myo Myat from Wa Gone village, Dawei East Forest region, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division stepped on a landmine while walking to their plantation.
Daw Mar Lwin sustained a serious injury to one leg and her son is suffering from temporary deafness.
“The KNU informed villagers they planted landmines and not to go to the area but that road is the only way to go to the plantations. The villagers want to go freely around their plantation. Planting of landmines near residential areas is unacceptable,” said a local villager.

Daw Mar Lwin was admitted to the Dawei Hospital and her son is receiving treatment at home.
On January 22nd, 2025, a 45-year-old man from Wa Gone village also stepped on a landmine while enroute to his plantation, and lost a leg.
On January 18th, 2025, the Karen National Union had a meeting with local villagers and informed them that they planted landmines around the hills near Wa Gone village and urged them not to go to the area.
The ethnic armed groups, the People’s Defense Forces operated under the National Unity Government – NUG and the military junta have been active in the Dawei East Forest area.
