Junta tightens security and extorts plantation workers

HURFOM: In Kyone Long (old) village and Kwin Shay village, Ye Township, Mon State, the junta’s troops are imposing tight security measures targeting plantation workers. Villagers reported to HURFOM that troops are also extorting huge amounts of money from people who failed to show their ID cards.
The troops have been targeting young and middle-aged men, asking a lot of questions that make plantation workers feel insecure to go to their workplace.
“When encountering the plantation workers, the junta’s troops forced them to show their ID cards. They asked lots of questions such as “Where are you going to?” “Where is your plantation?” and “When will you come back?”. They asked every detail. They didn’t ask women but just target the men. Now, every plantation worker has to bring their ID card when going to the plantation,” said a plantation worker.

Junta’s troops accuse those who fail to show their ID cards of having connection or supporting the resistance armed groups, and then attempt to extort millions of MMK from them.
“One of my friends failed to show his ID cards so the soldiers accused him of supporting the resistance group and arrested him, taking him to the 61st battalion. All of his belongings were seized. He had to pay two million MMK to get released,” said a local villager.
After the heavy armed clash in Kyone Long (old) village, Ye Township, the junta blocked all village roads in the nearby area. They reopened the roads in early February, 2025 but have heavily restricted the transportation of food and rice.
