Junta bans local villagers from going to plantation in R Yu Taung

HURFOM: The military junta has imposed a ban on travel to rubber plantations in R Yu Taung, Kwan Doon and Hnin Zone villages, Northern Ye Township, Mon State.  Local villagers reported to HURFOM that the ban has been in effect since the third week of October.

The junta claims the ban is because armed revolutionary groups were active in the area and that armed clashes could break out anytime, according to a local source.

The junta told every villager who passed their security gate to collect everything in their plantation within ten days. Then, they also warn the villagers not to go to the plantation if they don’t have urgent matters,” said the source.

Now, it is the harvest season (the best time to produce latex) at rubber plantations and the ban creates economic and livelihood problems for plantation workers and owners.

In some cases, the whole family has stayed in the plantation and worked there. They haven’t returned yet,” said a local source.

The military junta also warned villagers to make preparations for possible armed clashes.

Plantation workers need “recommendation letters” from both the junta-appointed Administrators and armed resistance groups in order to travel to their plantations and both parties extort them for these documents.
