HURFOM: On November 2nd, 2024, two young men – Kon Ye Htet Nine and Ko Min Htet Nine from Chauk Mile Kywell Chan Gone Ward, Mawlamyine, Mon State were arrested and charged for their criticism of the military junta on social media.

The junta has accused the two young men of causing instability to the State by their social media posts and charged them under the Burmese Criminal Act section #505(a) – punishment for defaming the State.

As far as I know, the two young men were arrested during a “stop and check” near Chauk Mile. The junta’s security forces found criticism of the junta on their mobile phones and arrested them. They have been allowed to meet with family members,” said a Mawlamyine resident who knows the matter.

Currently, both men are being detained at the Myine Thar Yar Police Station and will commence their legal proceedings in the Mawlamyine Township Court.

According to a report by a research team with the Myanmar Internet Project, within the last three months – from August to October, 2024, 143 civilians across Burma have been arrested for criticism of the military junta on social media.
