On October 30th, 2024, a regiment from the 44th Light Infantry Military Command consisting of 120 troops launched a military operation on Win Ka Law and Pyin Ka Doe village tracts, in Kyike Hto Township, Mon State.
From October 31st to November 4th, the regiment battled with the local resistance forces at least ten times.
Due to the battle, 5,522 residents from 17 villages in Pyin Ka Doe village fled from their homes, according to the statement by the Thaton District Karen National Union.
“The residents fled in advance before the entry of the regiment. Now, the regiment has retreated from the area and most of the residents have returned home. But some still dare not return,” said Ba Do Saw Aye Nine, the Secretary of the Thaton District Karen National Union.
More than 1,000 residents from four villages in Pyin Ka Doe village have yet to return.
“The residents from Win Ka Law and Kyauk Phyar village tracts returned home after the retreat of the regiment. But the residents from Pyin Ga Doe dare not return home. Only male residents have gone back to the village for a while to check their houses,” said a local source.
The Kyike Hto team of the Karen National Union has provided shelter, food and medicine to the displaced villagers, continued Ba Do Saw Aye Nine.
During the operation, the regiment arrested eight local plantation workers from Win Ka Law village tract and used them as human shields. All were released when the regiment retreated on November 4th.
The remaining displaced villagers are taking shelter in Zee Gone and Kan Nee villages.
