HURFOM: Since August, 2024, there has been an intense battle in Ah Nan Kwin village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State and more than 4,000 residents have had to flee their homes.

The battle continues to be intense and displaced villagers are unable to return to their community. It has been more than three months of displacement now, and residents are facing significant livelihood hardships.

We dare not return home. It isn’t okay to go back. The junta frequently launches artillery attacks. If we go back, we are also afraid of being arrested by the junta’s soldiers,” said a displaced villager.

Most of the displaced villagers have taken shelter at relatives’ houses in Mawlamyine, Thanbyuzayat and Mudon Township and nearby villages.

As we live in the city for a long time without having any job, it isn’t okay. We’ve faced livelihood hardship. Some villagers have fled to Thailand as it isn’t really okay here,” continued the displaced villager.

More than 500 houses were burnt down and destroyed during the battle and there have been at least ten casualties.

Our houses were destroyed and we have had to abandon them. There is no one in the village. we can’t start the rehabilitation,” said an Ah Nan Kwin resident.

Due to intense battles, taking place in Ah Nan Kwin villages, other ten neighboring villages such as Ta Nyin, Phar Yar, Pan Aung, Pu Taw, Yet Phaw, Ka Thit and Khun Na War villages have also fled their homes. The junta has cut off telecommunication networks in the area and restricted the movement of local residents.
