Junta’s Ministry of Education withholds salaries of ethnic language teachers

HURFOM: The Junta controlled Ministry of Education is planning to reopen schools in November, 2021, but ethnic language teachers in government schools do not know if they have their old jobs.

“We went to the education office and asked if we’re still language teachers but they (the education officials) replied they didn’t know. Our salaries have already been cut off,” said Mi Aye Mar, a Mon Language Teacher from Mudon Township.

Mon language teachers have not been paid for four months.

On August 26, the Ministry of Education had released an order that the salaries for ethnic language teachers would be re-collected by the Ministry.

“The salary of those who are not on the list of (officially-appointed) teachers were re-collected. It’s the duty of the education officials to carefully put the ethnic language teachers on the list of (officially-appointed) teachers. If they are not on the list, their salary will be re-collected,” said a staff of the Ministry of Ethnic Affair.

There are two types of ethnic language teacher positions in government schools. A Teacher assistant (TA) that is full-time and a part-time Language Assistant (LA). Persons holding either of these positions have been paid since July of this year. The daily rate of pay for each of these positions is 4,800 Kyat.
