Only one third of displaced students return to school

January 30, 2025

HURFOM: On January 9th, 2025, an intense armed clash took place in Kyone Long (old) village, Ye Chaung Pyar region, Ye Township, Mon State, and six government schools in five villages had to be closed.

More than 600 students fled from their homes with their parents, and most were unable to return to school due to livelihood and financial challenges.

Only one third of displaced students have returned to school. Most students remain in camps for internally displaced persons.  They have to struggle for food. Returning to school will cost them extra money and most students’ parents can afford the cost,” said a displaced parent.

Because now is the time for final exams, one parent said, “The junta has allowed displaced students to take their exams in nearby schools.

Only a few displaced students are attending the government schools in Zone Na Thar and Kyone Long (new) village, most are unable to return to their village schools.

We didn’t bring a school uniform when we fled. I’ve bought a new uniform for my kid and he has to go to school with only one uniform,” said one parent.

At the moment, there are no active armed clashes in Ye Chaung Pyar region but military tensions persist, making it difficult for l villagers to return to their homes.
