Kyikemayaw farmers halt farm work due to landmine

January 22, 2025

HURFOM: The residents in Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State believe that the military junta has planted landmines in Kaw Doon, Kaw Pa Naw, Ma Yan Gone and nearby villages where armed revolutionary forces are active.

Residents who must work on summer paddy farms and plantations are worried about the presence of landmines.

Summer paddy farming will start next month but farmers are hesitant to work in the fields, due to the threat of landmines.

No one can guarantee there was no landmine. We’re afraid of stepping on landmines on the way to our farm or plantation. But if we don’t do farm work, we have no food to eat. We have to do farm work even if we’re afraid of landmine threats,” said a Kyikemayaw resident.

Residents requested village Administrators to arrange for the removal of landmines, but there has been no action from local authorities.

Before the start of the winter, we’ve requested the Administrator to remove the landmines. But they’ve done nothing as of today,” said a local villager.

On January 10th, 2025, a couple from Ma Yan Gone village, Kyikemayaw Township stepped on a landmine and the explosion killed the husband and seriously injured the wife.

No armed group takes responsibility for planting landmines. The villagers have to suffer alone,” said a resident.
