Commodity price doubles in Maw Taung

January 22, 2025

HURFOM: Since December 18th, 2024, there have been frequent battles between the military junta and the joint resistance forces in Thane Kun and Chaung Hna Pauk villages, which are located along the Tenasserim – Maw Taung Motorway, Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim.

Maw Taung residents reported to HURFOM that the military junta blocked the road to the Thai – Burma border in Maw Taung after the armed conflict.  As a result, the price of imported foods from Thailand such as rice, onion, garlic, vegetable, fish and meat have doubled.

The price isn’t too high in Thailand. But there is a scarcity of food here and the importers have doubled the price. We, the customers, are the ones to suffer,” said a woman from Maw Taung.

A bag of rice was priced at 70,000 MMK before but is now priced at 130,000 MMK. 1 kg of onion used to cost 30 Thai Baht and now sells for 80 Baht.

We have to rely on rice imported from Thailand and it’s expensive. The price of potatoes and tomatoes have also gone up from 30 Thai Baht per kg to 50 Baht per kg,” said another woman.

Even though there has been no armed clashes, the junta blocked the Tenasserim – Maw Taung Motorway and villagers must travel by motorbikes using the Kyane Chaung village road.

The military junta has been launching operations in Yebyu, Htone Kar, Chaung Hna Pauk and Thane Kun villages, all located along the Tenasserim – Maw Taung Motorway forcing more than 12,000 local residents to flee their homes.
