Grandparents and granddaughter injured by junta’s artillery attack in Than Za Yet

HURFOM: On October 12th, 2024, the 207th Light Infantry Battalion based in Than Za Yet, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State launched indiscriminate artillery attacks despite no armed clashes in the nearby area. The attacks injured three grandparents and a granddaughter.
Artillery shells exploded in Ward #5, Than Za Yet Town and injured 67-year-old grandma Daw Htay Htay, 70-year-old grandpa U Than Maung and their 12-year-old granddaughter, Ma Moe Thin Zar Hein.
“The artillery shells dropped and exploded on the house of Grandpa U Than Maung. Their granddaughter is in critical condition. Now, she has started to recover,” said a Thane Za Yet resident.
The three injured victims were admitted to the Thane Za Yet General Hospital and as of October 15th they had not been discharged.
According to villagers, the junta responded with indiscriminate artillery attacks after a couple of captains from the 310th artillery regiment were arrested at the check-point maintained by the People’s Defense Force in Thone Kwa village, Thane Za Yet Township.
According to the data collected by HURFOM, from January to October, 2024, at least 50 civilians have been killed by the junta’s artillery attacks across Mon State and the majority of casualties occurred in Kyike Hto Township.
