HURFOM: On August 22nd, 2024, the military junta arrested six displaced villagers and a local man from Maung Ma Kan village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.

The People’s Defense Force attacked the Maung Ma Kan Police Station on August 17th, 2024 and on August 19th, a junta navy regiment launched an artillery attack on nearby villages. Troops then entered Tha Bot Sake and Maung Ma Kan villages.

All of the villagers from Tha Bot Sake fled their homes due to the military incursion.

The junta arrested 50-year-old U Tha Yoke Kam, 40-year-old U Pha Su, U Aye Lwin and his wife Daw Mee Mee, 20-year-old Ko Nay Htet Lin and 30-year-old Ko Nyi Nyi Zaw, all from Tha Bot Sake and had been taking shelter in Maung Ma Kan. The junta also arrested a Maung Ma Kan resident who lives in a hut.

They forcefully broke the door and arrested him. He hasn’t been released yet and no one knows his whereabouts. The junta also seized five motorbikes and a car,” said a Maung Ma Kan resident.

A local source reported to HURFOM that the military junta has extorted one million MMK for each person’s release.

On August 24th, some residents from Maung Ma Kan, Tha Bot Sake, Pan Dut Inn, Kyauk Sin and Ka Yin Gyi villages of Long Lone Township had to flee their homes due to military operations and armed clashes.

Nearly the entire village has fled (August 25). Those who have money are still okay at the moment but the villagers who don’t have money are struggling with food,” said a displaced Maung Ma Kan resident.

The displaced villagers are taking shelter in Dawei City, or Min Yat, Pa Nyit, Ka Myaw Kin and Tought Kyar Pyin villages while some have fled to other villages in Long Lone Township.

About 190 Tha Bot Sake residents reached out to us for help. There have been about 30 displaced villagers near “Hmyaw Yit” Pagoda. The majority of that group are children and they’re in need of food,” said one social worker who helps displaced villagers.

At the moment, the military regiment has stationed themselves in the Maung Ma Kan Police Station and has occupied some houses in the village.
