HURFOM: On July 24, 2024, the junta’s security forces have checked, arrested and extorted money from local people who have installed and used Signal Application in their mobile phone in Mawlamyine, the Capital of Mon State.

The Signal Application does not need VPN – virtual private network and is more secure than other application so that it has become the best choice for the local people but the military junta has accused the users of using the application for supporting the revolutionary forces. Then, they have banned the usage of the application on July 15, 2025.

Since after the ban, the security forcers have been checking local people and pedestrians if they are using or installing the Signal Application in their mobile phones at “Zay Joe” junction, the exist way to Kyikemayaw and the “Dye Wun Kwin” traffic junction.

During checking the mobile phone of my friend, they found the Signal Application and extorted 100,000 MMK from him. Now, we have to use a spare phone when we go outside,” said a young man from Mawlamyine.

At the moment, the security forces have seriously been checking mobile phones in Mawlamyine and if they find someone has used or installed Signal or VPN or Google applications, they arrest or extort the users.

Now, when going outside, we have to uninstall all applications. We have to use two mobile phones – one is for going outside and one is for using at home,” said a woman who works at Mawlamyine.

The military junta has banned people from using social media to block flow of information and to oppress right to information and they have also declared the use of VPN applications is illegal.
