HURFOM: Many children in Mon State are suffering from dengue fever which is very common in the rainy season.  The number of child patients is increasing day after day, according to the sources from the Mawlamyine General Hospital.

There have been more than 1,000 dengue fever patients since June, 2024 and about 20 children per day have been admitted to the maternal and child department (aka American Hospital) of the Mawlamyine General Hospital, according to a nurse from the hospital.

Dengue fever starts as soon as the rainy season begins. The main cause is from a mosquito bite. Most patients are in the 8-14 age range. This month, about 20 children have been admitted to hospital every day,” said the nurse.

According to the public health department, Mawlamyine, Chaung Zone and Kyike Hto Townships have the greatest number of dengue fever patients.

It’s getting worse this year. Now, it’s just the beginning of the season, some patients have already died. Most patients reach the hospital only after being in critical condition,” said a nurse.

The Mawlamyine General Hospital is treating about 60 patients.

According to the data by the Ministry of Health, which is controlled by the junta, there were 1,000 dengue fever patients in Mon State in 2023, of which three children died.
