Dawei youth go abroad to avoid conscription

June 19, 2024

HURFOM: On May 24th, 2024, junta-appointed Administrators met at the hall of the compound office in Dawei City, Tenasserim Division to discuss details regarding the third batch of compulsory military service. Soon after the meeting, summons letters with exact names and ID numbers were issued.

The letters have been delivered in every ward. After accepting the letters, parents have to go to the ward administration office and fill out the conscription form. The junta hasn’t collected candidates door-to-door but they have sent summons letters regularly,” said a local source.

The third batch of conscription candidates targets current university students who just turned 18. Most young men who have accepted summons letters have fled abroad.

After accepting summons letters, parents are worried about their sons and have let them go abroad,” said a woman from Dawei City.

The junta organized military training for conscripts at the 12th Advanced Military Training School in Pa Loud Town.  More than 500 candidates from the first two batches have been trained at the school.

After the enactment of the public conscription law, many youths began to go abroad to avoid compulsory military service. In response the junta banned young men from both travel or working abroad beginning in May, 2024.
