AMDP Voices Concern that Children in Mon State Will Lose Their Mother Language

The All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP) has raised concerns that Mon children throughout Burma’s Mon State will lose their mother tongue because they are only allowed to be taught the Burmese language in their schools. Motorists Along Ye-Thanbyuzayat-Mudon Road Forced to Purchase Propaganda Film

HURFOM: Complaints are emerging from travelers on the Ye-Thanbyuzayat-Mudon road, located in Mon State, that authorities are extorting motorists by forcing everyone traveling along the road to purchase a propaganda DVD about Myanmar fire brigade activities. Local people are disappointed with authorities for engaging in such acts as the country tries to reform. Read more
Khaw Zar Residents Cannot Afford Extortion Demands; Live in Fear of Local Mon Splinter Group

Residents of Khaw Zar Sub-township, Ye Township, Mon State continue to be concerned for their safety as they cannot afford extortion payments demanded by a local Mon splinter group. The community lives in fear because the Mon splinter group has been known to kidnap villagers who fail to pay them. The Mon community of southern Burma lives in constant in fear of kidnapping, physical assault, and demands of extortion by either Burmese military troops or Mon splinter groups. Read more
Ye Residents Face Extortion from Civil Groups During Construction Projects

When Residents of Ye Township build new houses, they are forced to comply with extortion practices of the Municipal Committee Group. Earlier this year the Municipal Committee Group stopped Nay Aung Myint, 50, owner of the Su Mon Furniture Factory, from finishing construction of his house, until he paid the committee. Nai Aung Myint is a wealthy member of the Ye Township, Mon State community, and donates generously to the people of the area. Read more
New Mon State Party attends Geneva Call workshop for prevention of Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict

On April 25-26th, the New Mon State Party (NMSP) held a two-day sexual violence workshop on the Thai-Burmese border, conducted by the non-government organization Geneva Call. The objective of the workshop was to highlight international law surrounding sexual violence, and to have members of the NMSP sign Geneva Call’s “Deed of Commitment”, which prohibits sexual violence and gender discrimination in armed conflict. Twenty-five members of NMSP attended the workshop. Read more
