Junta conducts constant arrests in Thanbyuzayat over December and January

January 11, 2024

HURFOM: Since December, 2023, the military junta has arrested nearly 70 residents of Thanbyuzayat, accusing them of promoting terrorism by providing financial support to the People’s Defense Forces (PDF).

The junta continues to arrest individuals on a constant basis into January, 2024, and have put in place mobility restrictions, as well as interrogating rubber plantation workers who have to go to their workplaces at night.

We fear going to our plantation at night. They check our phones and we have to answer all of their questions. If you cannot speak Burmese, they will seize your phone. It’s more dangerous for young female rubber plantation workers,” said one Thanbyuzayat resident.

The junta forces have also arrested residents in nearby villages.

The arrests are conducted constantly under the accusation of providing support to the PDF. Some victims were released after paying a certain amount of ransom,” said one local source.

The junta has tortured and killed two detainees.  Most of the others arrested have been charged under the act of Anti-Terrorism Act. The junta has also sealed and seized 18 houses and business operations.
