Junta arrests Chair of a social welfare association for social media comments

HURFOM: On December 16th, 2023, Daw Saw Su Su Htwe, the Chair of “Shin Tan Chin Twelve Lat” Social Welfare Association, based in Thu Dhamma Watti New Town, Thaton Township, Mon State was arrested, according to a source close to her family members.

Daw Saw Su Su Htwe wrote a comment under the social media post of a member of the People’s Defense Force (PDF) who was a former member of her association. The junta came to arrest her within hours after writing the comment.

“She just wrote a comment under the post of a PDF who was a former member of her association. Her comment was not anything special. It just said, “Wish for a quick reunion”. Military lobbyists (informers) requested the junta arrest her and she was arrested,” said a source close to her family.

The pro-military Telegram Channel reported Daw Saw Su Su Htwe comment promoted terrorism and she was an important supporter of the People’s Defense Forces. A few hours later, the junta arrested her at her house.

Daw Saw Su Su Htwe is being detained and interrogated at the 9th Military Training School and has not been allowed to meet with her family since December 19th.

“Ma Su (Daw Saw Su Su Htwe) has done a lot for Thaton Township. She played a leading role during COVID-19 breakout. Arrests shouldn’t be conducted just because of writing a comment. I want her to be released soon,” said an official from a social welfare association in Thaton Township.

Since the arrest many social welfare associations in Thaton Township have suspended some of their activities.
